Tolkien (12A)

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Colm Meaney, Lilly Collins

Director: Dome Karukoski

Duration: 112 mins

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R.) is known as the 'father' of modern fantasy literature with his famous middle-earth fantasy novels 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. In later life he was an Oxford Professor in English and Anglo-Saxon. However, 'Tolkien' explores the formative years of the orphaned author (played by Nicholas Hoult) as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school.

The film then takes him to the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear the ‘fellowship’ apart. Tolkien himself served from 1915-1920 and it is the experiences that he lived through there which were used to illuminate his fantasy lands.
