Yesterday (12A)

Yesterday

Starring: Kate McKinnon, Himesh Patel, Lily James

Director: Danny Boyle

Screenplay: Richard Curtis

Duration: 126 min

From Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis comes a British musical comedy about dreams of stardom and unexplained phenomena. Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is a struggling singer-songwriter in an English seaside town. His dreams of fame are rapidly fading despite the love and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James). Until one day, during a mysterious global blackout, a car hits him and he comes round to find that nobody remembers The Beatles – apart from him! Feeling obliged to bring the legendary melodies of the Fab Four back to life, and with a little help from his steely American agent (Kate McKinnon), Jack rises to global stardom faster than you can say, ‘I believe in yesterday.’ But he may have taken on more than he can handle. Great songs and a cameo appearance from Ed Sheeran.

**** A glowing tribute to The Beatles and their music, this is both a toe-tapping pleasure to watch and a smart, occasionally scathing look at how we get things wrong. Empire

**** It is directed with dash and gusto by Danny Boyle. Guardian
