NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE SCREENING

By Stefano Massini

Adapted by Ben Power

Directed by Sam Mendes

Duration: 210 minutes with 2 intervals

'An astonishing evening.....an acting masterclass'  Guardian

This smash-hit stage play will be broadcast live from London’s West End as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th Birthday season. The story of a family and a company that changed the world, told in three parts on a single evening. It returns to the UK following a sold-out run at the National Theatre and Broadway and has been nominated for five Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, Best Director for Sam Mendes (Skyfall), Best Actor - joint nomination for Adam Godley, Ben Miles and Simon Russell Beale (who play the Lehman Brothers, their sons and grandsons) as well as Best Set Design for Es Devlin.

On a cold September morning in 1844 a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside. Dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins.

163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, and triggers the largest financial crisis in history.

Dementia Friendly Cinemas have proven to be very therapeutic for people with memory problems and their families. Besides engaging the brain and stimulating emotions, being part of an audience enjoying a film helps people with dementia and their carers to feel less isolated and also challenges the stigma associated with the condition.

Whilst promoted as a dementia friendly screening, we hope anyone who loves the old films will come along for an afternoon of fond memories.

Sometimes Always Never (12A)

Sometimes Always Never

Starring: Bill Nighy, Alice Lowe, Sam Riley

Director: Carl Hunter

Duration 99 mins

Sharp of both suit and vocabulary, Bill Nighy (The Bookshop), is winningly deadpan as Scrabble-obsessed Merseyside tailor Alan, whose eldest son Michael stormed out of the house after a particularly heated round of the popular board game, never to return. Years later, Alan and his other son Peter (Sam Riley) continue the search while trying to repair their own strained relationship.

Working from a witty and astute script by veteran screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce (The Railway Man, Goodbye Christopher Robin), Liverpudlian director Carl Hunter deploys a vivid visual style and striking production design to capture the shifting moods of a family who know plenty of words but struggle to communicate.

A triple score-worthy supporting cast includes Jenny Agutter and Tim McInnerny.

Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf (U)

Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf

“For me, garden design isn’t just about plants, it is about emotion, atmosphere, a sense of contemplation. You try to move people with what you do. You look at this, and it goes deeper than what you see. It reminds you of something in the genes — nature, or the longing for nature.”

Piet Oudolf

The documentary, FIVE SEASONS: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf, immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes us inside his creative process, from his beautifully abstract sketches, to theories on beauty, to the ecological implications of his ideas.

Intimate discussions take place through all fours seasons in Piet’s own gardens at Hummelo, and on visits to his signature public works in New York, Chicago, and the Netherlands, as well as to the far-flung locations that inspire his genius, including desert wildflowers in West Texas and post-industrial forests in Pennsylvania.

As a narrative thread, the film also follows Oudolf as he designs and installs a major new garden at Hauser & Wirth, a gallery and arts centre in Somerset, a garden he considers his best work yet.

Piet Oudolf has radically redefined what gardens can be. As Rick Darke, the famous botanist, says to Piet in the film, “your work teaches us to see what what we have been unable to see.” Through poetic cinematography and unique access, FIVE SEASONS will reveal all that Piet sees, and celebrate all that we as viewers have been unable to see.

A film akin to the gardens themselves - elegiac. Washington Post

With his floppy silver hair and gentle zeal Oudolf is like a botanical David Attenborough Times
