The Deane Big Band

***Early Bird Tickets are available for each performance. The Early Bird tickets for each performance closes 1 week before the performance date ***

About the band

One of the top big bands in the Southwest, The Deane Big Band is based in Taunton and plays in venues across the West Country. One of the few modern day big bands to have a full schedule of gigs and concerts across the year, its success is due to a combination of first-class musicianship and a constantly changing programme of music.

The Deane Big Band of course plays music from the classic big band era of the thirties and forties, including numbers by Miller, Basie, Goodman and Ellington, but it also features up to date classics by artists such as Mingus, Weather Report and Radiohead. The band even has a resident arranger enabling it to showcase its own unique arrangements.

Plus, with two great vocalists singing everything from Frank Sinatra to Michael Bublé, or Ella Fitzgerald to Norah Jones, the band always goes down a storm.

Thursday Jan 18

Time-travelling with a Big Band. From Glenn Miller to Radiohead, from Tuxedo Junction to Creep,

the first in a series of four gigs at the Beehive introduces the broad scope of the band and its two fantastic vocalists. Whether it’s I Heard it through the grapevine, or a Sinatra classic, or Brubeck’s Take5, you’ll have something to sing about (including, of course, Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing).

Thursday April 18

Duke Ellington, his legacy, and Charlie Mingus. No vocals this time, giving plenty of space for our fabulous soloists. Whether it’s Take the A Train or Don’t Get Around Much Anymore the band will swing you through the glorious Duke Ellington songbook. Then, moving up a gear, it’s onto one of Ellington’s greatest admirers, Mingus, with Better Get it in Your Soul and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - music with added space for improvisation joyously taking Ellington’s ideas to church.
