The Secret Life of Enid Blyton

The Secret Life of Enid Blyton
On a Role Theatre Company Presents the Secret Life of Enid Blyton
Starring Liz Grand as Enid Blyton
Written by Kit Hunter
Running Time: 1 hour 45 minutes (Including interval)
Tickets Prices: General Admission £17
All ticket prices include a £2 booking fee.

Virtually everybody of a certain age has read an Enid Blyton book. She was loved by children (except her younger daughter who hated her) but vilified by the BBC, teachers, critics and librarians.

She sold more than 600 million books, despite all her work being banned by the BBC and many libraries and schools for more than thirty years. She was accused of being a racist and of using such limited vocabulary that it actually hindered children's reading progress.

Her love-life was interesting and she had numerous affairs including with her children's nanny. She enjoyed playing golf so much that she bought a golf course near Swanage.

She died of Alzheimer's in 1968 aged 71, mourned by millions of readers all over the world.

Liz Grand (previous shows "The Second Best Bed", "Where Is Mrs. Christie?" and "Mrs. Churchill: My life With Winston") plays this remarkable and controversial woman and brings you her story.

"The show's subject is brilliantly played by Liz Grand, already well-versed in portraying strong independent women, appearing in other solo productions "Where is Mrs Christie?", "Mrs Churchill - My Life With Winston" and "The Second Best Bed". ***** View From The Stalls 8/23

"This production evokes in the audience considerable admiration for the phenomenal output and achievements of Enid's writing career, some sympathy for her harsh and snobbish treatment by her critics, some respect for her charitable work and the positive morality in her stories, though little warmth for her as a person. 'Behind the Arras ' 8/23

Adam Sweet Band

Adam Sweet Band
Adam Sweet Band
Running Time: 2hrs 15

Tickets: Advanced: £15. General Admission £19
All ticket prices include a £2 booking fee

Adam Sweet delivers brooding blues and rootsy rock, balancing richly detailed song writing with soulful vocals and expertly piercing guitar work.

Taking his cue from the British blues boom sounds and rock ri ff s of the 60s and 70s, the independent blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter has carved out his own territory between classic rock, blues and Americana. Since first taking to the live scene in the South West of England at the age of 15 he has worked in various guises: solo acoustic, session player and with his own bands. The result is a consummate ability to switch from sensitive singer-songwriter to full-on blues rocker with ease, as demonstrated in his countless live performances and his output as a recording artist.

Sonically, Adam is a guitar-slidin' force of nature whose songs can fi ll a hall with their effortless verve. Ranging from quietly desperate blues tunes to careening full- tilt rock, his approach is a testament to the idea that less can, in fact, be considerably more. A young bluesman with an ancient soul and a large presence in the here-and-now.

Adam picked up a guitar aged seven but his interest was only smouldering for the first few years. A spell studying classical guitar failed to provide the spark of inspiration he needed but things began to change when he started private tui ti on with Adrian John Loveridge, a veteran of the 1980’s Californian music scene who had just moved back to his hometown of Lyme Regis, Dorset. Guitar lessons suddenly got much cooler with tales of life as an LA session musician and Adrian’s gold record gleaming on the wall. The breakthrough came when Adam’s new mentor took him to see blues-rock band The Hamsters at Lyme’s Marine Theatre. Adam le ft with Jimi Hendrix ri ff s ringing in his ears and was soon playing regularly on the local circuit recreating the music of his newfound guitar heroes.

In the years that followed Adam performed countless gigs in numerous bands where he honed his craft and found his voice before embarking on a solo career...

His acclaimed debut album ‘Small Town Thinking’ , recorded both in Devon and Nashville, was released at the start of 2014. The album steadily gathered approval with Adam’s “ timeless” gift earning him rave reviews including a full 5-star rating and Album of the Month award in Guitar Techniques Magazine, praising the album for  offering a “whole new perspective on the (blues) genre”.

Adam’s 2017 EP ‘Take Your Time’ was a stripped back acoustic offering that perfectly captured the essence of his renowned one-man shows. It was produced and performed solely by Adam and featured a track written with founder member of Level 42 Boon Gould . Tracks from this release featured heavily on BBC Introducing and received several accolades - “Wonderful rock, blues and roots guitar and very classy arrangements” (Album of the Week, Laurel Canyon Music).

In 2020 Adam marked his evolution into a fully- fledged blues-rock artist with the release of his second full studio album ‘Sink or Swim’ , cementing his unique blend of blue-eyed blues and soulful southern rock. Adam’s sound developed from working closely with band members Ian Jennings on bass (Je ff Beck, Robert Plant, Ronnie Wood, Mick Fleetwood) and Garry Kroll on drums (Mark Ronson, Joss Stone, Sandi Thom). Recorded with producer Josiah J Manning (Kris Barras Band) at Momentum Studios, Plymouth , the album captured the energy of the band whilst always serving the richly detailed song writing. ‘Sink or Swim’ received extensive radio play spending two months in the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association Top 40 chart and was listed in the Top 3 Breakthrough Albums of 2020 by ‘Get Ready To ROCK’ and included in the Best Americana Albums of 2020 by Dutch blogger ‘Slim Chance’ .

In July 2021 Adam released the single ‘ Dead Flowers ’ – this cover of the Rolling Stones country-rock classic became a fi rm favourite during the lockdown livestreams Adam was broadcasting from home during the pandemic. By popular request he recorded the song, which also marked 50 years since the release of the original. It stays true to Adam’s acoustic lockdown version, with his band providing the rhythm sec ti on plus vocal harmonies by Alex Hart . The track was recorded, produced and mixed by Adam at home whilst he and his band waited to get back out on the road.

A ft er the lockdown Adam focused on what he missed most during the enforced down ti me - playing live with his band! With the addition of his old friend Paddy Blight (The Hoosiers, Andy Timmons, Wildwood Kin) on bass and new recruit Thomas Hughes (Nektar, Eddie Floyd, Geno Washington, Danny Bryant, The Selecter) on the organ, the rejuvenated Adam Sweet Band have been rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the tightest units on the circuit. In 2023 they were crowned Introducing Stage winners at The Great British Rock and Blues Festival and have continued to build on this with triumphant performances at venues and festivals across the UK, including Sidmouth & Rye International Jazz & Blues Festivals, Jazz Jurassica , multiple shows at Exeter Phoenix and supports for the likes of Wishbone Ash, Kris Barras Band and Elles Bailey.

In February 2024 the band released a limited edition EP ‘Live at Crescent Records’ featuring some of the favourite cover songs from their live repertoire. Recorded and filmed live in one day in the stunning Wiltshire studio, the session captured the magic of the band's onstage chemistry with the accompanying series of YouTube videos clocking up over 80,000 views in the first few months of release. They’ve continued to perform across the UK in 2024 including debut performances at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, London's iconic 100 Club and a headline slot at the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival in Colne.

The Unravelling Wilburys

Now hear this y’all:

Legend has it the original Wilbury brothers from Nashville, Tennessee, were plying their trade as a good ol’ Country band one night in Tootsie’s Bar, when who should walk in but George Harrison from The Beatles and his old pal JeD Lynne outta the ELO. After a few beers, George and JeD decided they loved the Wilbury boys and called up some of their friends, inviting them downtown to hear for themselves. Those friends turned out to be Roy Orbison, that Tom Petty out of the Heartbreakers, and Bobby Dylan himself.

The story goes that, after the show, the famous five wanted to hang out with the shy and retiring Unravelling Wilburys. They all got pretty drunk, and it seemed like the Wilbury brothers had got their big break when Tom Petty allegedly said they should all work together.

Six months went by and the Wilburys heard nothing. Then one day they was passing a record store and heard one of their own songs playing on the hi- fi. “Who’s this playing our song?” they said to the guy behind the counter. “Why, it’s a new supergroup,” the guy replied. “They call themselves The Traveling Wilburys.

” Yes folks, it seems the Traveling Wilburys became a tribute band to our home-spun originals.

Well, a few years and more passed and finally the Unravelling Wilburys decided to ‘reclaim’ those songs, putting together a set of all the hits and the best stuD Dylan, Petty, Orbison, Lynne and Harrison could muster between ’em. Then they headed for the UK. The folks there ain’t got much of a clue about Country music and took to ’em straight away.

Pretty soon they was travelling all over the country, from the Orkney Islands to the Isle of Wight; from Penzance to Perth; from Southwold to South Wales; packing out theatres along the way in towns whose names they’d never heard of and couldn’t pronounce.

The show features the best of the Wilbury albums (“Handle with Care”; “The End of the Line”; “The Devil’s Been Busy”; “Tweeter & The Monkey Man” etc.) and some of their supposedly thievin’ counterparts’ numbers like “Only the Lonely”; Won’t Back Down”; “While my Guitar Gently Weeps”; “Like a Rollin’ Stone” and “Mr. Blue Sky”. The act even contains the kind of comedy only a band spending too many nights in Travelodge hotels could dream up.

The Unravelling Wilburys are now so popular they even got to be a question on that TV show “The Chase”. Now that’s fame…even if it ain’t fortune.

So- Ladies and Gentlemen, turn oD your hearing aid, put your Zimmer frame to one side and prepare for a musical journey with Walter, Blind Melon, Sticky Willy, Thumper and the Reverend Honky Tonk Wilbury. It’s a journey you ain’t gonna forget in a hurry.

In the Welsh town of Port Talbot, 1942, Richard Jenkins (Harry Lawtey) lives as a wayward schoolboy, caught between the pressures of his struggling family, a devastating war, and his own ambitions.

However, a new opportunity arises when Richard’s natural talent for drama catches the attention of his teacher, Philip Burton (BAFTA winner Toby Jones). Taking Richard under his wing, the young man thrives under Philip’s strict tutelage and the guidance of kindly landlady, Ma Smith (Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville). However, as the acting world comes within Richard’s reach, the burden of his past risks holding him back forever.

This film is the story of how Richie Jenkins was turned into Richard Burton the greatest star Wales has ever produced and who later said of Philip Burton that 'I owe him everything'.

What began as a chance meeting has evolved into a ground breaking theatre production set to tour the UK in 2024 and 2025.

Manhunter & Mindhunter is a gripping two-man show that delves into the dark world of serial killers, offering audiences a unique blend of true crime storytelling and psychological exploration. Both performers have been featured on a variety of UK TV Shows.

Manhunter & Mindhunter is not just another true crime show; it’s a deep dive into the mind of a serial killer, with a particular focus on Levi Bellfield, one of the UK’s most infamous criminals.

Colin Sutton, “Manhunter,” will lead the audience through the intense and meticulous investigation that led to Bellfield’s arrest, charge, and eventual conviction. Sutton’s account is not just a retelling of facts but an immersive experience that brings the audience into the heart of the investigation, revealing the unparalleled truth behind one of the most complex cases of his career.

On the other side of the stage, Steve Gaskin is “Mindhunter.” Gaskin’s part of the production delves into the psychological makeup of Bellfield, exploring the chilling characteristics that define a psychopath. Steve is a criminal psychologist. His analysis goes beyond the surface, offering a deeper understanding of what drives serial killers to commit such heinous acts. But Gaskin’s role doesn’t stop at Bellfield; he broadens the scope to examine the psychology of serial killers in general, shedding light on the patterns of behaviour that have baffled investigators and true crime addicts for decades.

One of the most intriguing aspects of “Manhunter & Mindhunter” is the interactive element it brings to the theatre. Audience members won’t just be passive observers; they’ll have the chance to engage directly. During the show, guests will be invited to measure their own “psychopathy”, using tools and methods that Gaskin and Sutton will introduce. This unique feature not only adds an element of personal intrigue but also challenges the audience to reflect on the thin line between normality and the dark recesses of the human mind.
