Fool’s Paradise, The Two of Us, Us, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable
choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon.
FOOL’S PARADISE
Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations
with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and
first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.
THE TWO OF US
The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep
intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had
American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.
US (DUET)
Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten
Henson’s music.
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)
The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the
ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy
melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie
Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance
between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was
Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in
which the two central characters dance through Paris.

The Guardian
Winston Churchill is arguably one of the most famous Englishmen that has ever lived. His inspirational leadership helped win the Second World War, and his parliamentary career of 62 years ensured he was responsible for many momentous decisions.
They say that behind every great man, there is a great woman. Was this true in Churchill’s case? What of Clementine, his wife for 56 years? Did he bully her like he did so many other people? Was he as grumpy and irascible at home as he often was in the House of Commons? Given his strength and conviction, did Clem have any influence on him at all? Or was she 'the little lady at home'?
All these questions will be answered, and many more, in Liz Grand’s superb, moving, sensitive and informative portrayal of Clementine Churchill. (Liz’s other current shows are ‘The Second Best Bed’ and ‘Where Is Mrs. Christie?’).
Winston himself said, “my most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.”
Reviews
“The show was incredible and Liz's performance utterly outstanding. So many favourable comments. Don't know how on earth she does it and a remarkable script.” Sue Ablett, Director Evesham Word Festival
“This single actress show makes huge demands on Liz Grand who occupies the stage for two full acts on her own: it is a huge ‘tour de force’, a tremendous amount to learn and deliver, and she holds and absorbs our attention brilliantly.” Behind the Arras"
“The natural, sensitive and sympathetic way with which Liz Grand portrays ‘the little lady at home’ is impressive.” View from the Stalls
“And when the tears start to trickle down the actor’s face, they seem to speak louder than any words. In fact, to unashamedly borrow from a phrase, yes, for Liz Grand, this was arguably her finest hour.” Showtime
