The Truth About Love: Bizet to Broadway

The Truth About Love: Bizet to Broadway

A fund raising concert in aid of Action East Devon and Honiton Dementia Alliance.

A delightful evening of musical entertainment full of popular tunes from the worlds of opera and musical theatre.  All proceeds from this one off performance will go towards supporting people living with Dementia in the Honiton area through the charities Action East Devon and Honiton Dementia Alliance.

The London West Ends Louise Walsh joins Alison Kettlewell from English National Opera and The Royal Opera House to bring you this evening of musical favourites and will be accompanied on the piano by Joyce Clarke. They will be joined by tenor Tom Morris and the Devon Close Harmony Quartet.

Louise lives in London and is an internationally renowned soprano with credits including the role of Christine in Andrew Lloyd Webbers 'Phantom of the Opera'. Louise has also sung with English National Opera and in many Opera houses throughout Europe.

Alison lives locally but is currently a guest artist at the Royal Opera House. Recent engagements have included understudying Katisha in the 'Mikado' for English National Opera and concerts in many cathedrals throughout the UK. Alison has sung roles in opera houses and concert halls throughout Europe and the United Kingdom at venues ranging from Italian Opera Houses to the Royal Albert Hall.

Joyce Clarke also lives locally and has performed across the UK. She has given Piano Recitals in Venice and, more recently, in Tuscany where, in 2019, she gave her third annual Recital at a Summer Festival near Arezzo.

Tom is a member of the Devon Close Harmony Quartet an a cappella quartet based in Newton Abbott. Although they initially sang close harmony in the American “Barbershop” style, they have since gained a reputation for performing a wide variety of musical styles, including rich and exciting contemporary arrangements of classic folk, pop, gospel and blues songs. Tom also has a wider classical repertoire and will be singing alongside Alison and Louise.

NT Live: Cyrano de Bergerac

Cyrano de Bergerac

By Edmond Rostand, in a new version by Martin Crimp

Directed by Jamie Lloyd

Cast Includes James McAvoy

Duration: 180 mins (tbc)

A National Theatre Live Event by the Jamie Lloyd Company.

James McAvoy (X-Men, Atonement) returns to the stage in an inventive new adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, this performance was filmed in front of a live audience at the Playhouse Theatre in London.

Fierce with a pen and notorious in combat, Cyrano almost has it all - if only he could win the heart of his true love Roxane. There’s just one big problem: he has a nose as huge as his heart. Will a society engulfed by narcissism get the better of Cyrano - or can his mastery of language set Roxane’s world alight?

Edmond Rostand’s masterwork is adapted by Martin Crimp, with direction by Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal). This classic play will be brought to life with linguistic ingenuity to celebrate Cyrano’s powerful and resonant resistance against overwhelming odds.

The Undercover Hippy - Solo

The Undercover Hippy - Solo

Best known for his high energy full band shows, it is something of a rare treat to catch Billy Rowan, a.k.a. The Undercover Hippy, giving an intimate solo performance.

The show will offer an opportunity to hear the songs in their rawest form, up close and personal, and to really connect with the lyrics and the performer. One of Billy’s biggest strengths is the way he manages to pack his songs full of political and social commentary whilst at the same time remaining playful and uplifting, and this playfulness is even more apparent in an acoustic setting.

Covering topics from fake news, internet privacy and the U.S. election, to nappy wearing barristers and best friends trying to snog your mum, his performance takes you on a rollercoaster of storytelling and thought provoking protest pieces.
