Jacob & Drinkwater (U)

Jacob & Drinkwater

Jacob & Drinkwater

Join Jacob & Drinkwater as they celebrate 10 years of the duo with a UK tour throughout May & June 2024.

They first began performing together back in 2014. They have since released an EP, a live album, and two studio albums, taken in plaudits from BBC6 and BBC Introducing, performed at Glastonbury and toured extensively in the UK and Europe. With a core sound built around acoustic guitar, double bass and vocal harmonies their live show has been described as “intense and spellbinding” by Folk Radio UK, all its energy, musical chemistry and spontaneity drawing comparisons with the virtuosic pairing of John Martyn and Danny Thompson.

Their strongly folk influenced sound is full of vitality, dynamism and surprising musical departures. Jacob’s sweeping vocals never fail to captivate, delivering many a spine-tingling moment; the fluidity and precision of his finger-picking underpinned by Drinkwater’s nimbly rhythmic double bass; at times sweetly soaring, haunting, percussive and driving, the layers of depth a perfect counterfoil. The added complement of stirring vocal harmonies nicely rounds off the mix.

With the duo now living 11,000 miles apart they only tour the UK once a year so catch them while you can!

‘they draw the audience into their world with a powerful mesmerising set.’ - FRUK

Synopsis

At a glittering party in 18th-century Paris, the poet Andréa Chenier delivers an impassioned

denunciation of Louis XVI. Five years later, the Revolution has given way to the Terror,

transforming the power balance between Chénier, his beloved Maddalena, and Gérard, the

man who could destroy him...

Jonas Kaufmann headlines David McVicar’s spectacular staging, under the baton of long-

time collaborator Antonio Pappano – who conducts Giordano’s epic historical drama of

revolution and forbidden love in his last production as Music Director of The Royal Opera.

Founded in Barnsley Rock City in 2006 by their outspoken and energetic ringleader, Scott Doonican, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are on a mission!

Far from being your typical folk ensemble, this cult-like collective of like-minded knit-wear enthusiasts are determined to follow in their spiritual father’s immortal footsteps and keep his legacy alive. Scott and his brothers-from-other-mothers, Alan, J.R., Mo-Jo and Dave, have quite the talent for Bar-Stewardizing other famous people’s songs with new satirical comedy lyrics, on folk instruments, and to complete their outrageously understated image, the Doonicans have become instantly recognisable for their immaculate hair and their stylish choice of sexy knitwear, and instantly memorable for their lairy, no-holds-barred, anarchic live shows.

A group that is both perpetually on the move, ever-evolving and joyously independent, they have played close to 1300 side- splitting shows to date, and have brought smiles and belly- laughs to audiences across the UK; from Barnsley to Barnstaple, from Glastonbury to Glasgow. They continue to wow audiences with a fine selection of their greatest hits, including the likes of “Jump Ararnd”, “The Lady In Greggs”, "How Deep Is Your Glove?", "Paint 'em Back", "Goat Yoga", and “If I Could Punch A Face... It’d Be Justin Bieber’s”.

The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican can’t wait to bring their shindig to The Beehive for their 18th Birthday and they promise that they WILL rock you... but gently!!

They deserve the reputation they have earned as one of the festival scene's hottest bookings."

Running time: 2 hours 7 minutes

Director: Maiwenn

Jeanne du Barry follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a working-class woman determined to climb the social ladder, using her charms to escape her impoverished life.

Through this ravishing courtesan, the king rediscovers his appetite for life and feels he can no longer live without her. Making Jeanne his last official mistress, scandal erupts as no one at Court will accept a girl from the streets into their rarified world.

Nostalgic Cinema: The African Queen (1951) (PG)

Nostalgic Cinema: The African Queen (1951)

Directed by John Huston

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Morley

Duration 115 mins.

After religious spinster's (Katharine Hepburn) missionary brother is killed in WWI Africa, dissolute steamer captain (Humphrey Bogart) offers her safe passage. She's not satisfied so she persuades him to destroy a German gunboat. The two spend most of their time fighting with each other rather than the Germans. Time alone on the river leads to love.

Dementia Friendly Cinemas have proven to be very therapeutic for people with memory problems and their families. Besides engaging the brain and stimulating emotions, being part of an audience enjoying a film helps people with dementia and their carers to feel less isolated and also challenges the stigma associated with the condition.

All Nostalgic Cinema performances have subtitles to assist full enjoyment of the film by any members of the audience who are hard of hearing.

Whilst promoted as a dementia friendly screening, we hope anyone who loves the old films will come along for an afternoon of fond memories.
