Jeanne Du Barry (15)

Jeanne Du Barry

Jeanne Du Barry

Running time: 2 hours 7 minutes

Director: Maiwenn

Cast includes: Johnny Depp . Maiwenn . Stanislav Stanic

Jeanne du Barry follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a working-class woman determined to climb the social ladder, using her charms to escape her impoverished life.

Her lover, the Comte du Barry (Melvil Poupaud), wishes to present her to King Louis XV (Johnny Depp) and orchestrates a meeting through the influential Duke of Richelieu (Pierre Richard). The encounter goes far beyond his expectations for it was love at first sight for the King and Jeanne.

Through this ravishing courtesan, the king rediscovers his appetite for life and feels he can no longer live without her. Making Jeanne his last official mistress, scandal erupts as no one at Court will accept a girl from the streets into their rarified world.

In a gorgeous period piece that is never boring, you can’t deny the entertainment value of Madame du Barry, one of the most captivating women since Madame Bovary, and all the more fascinating because she was real. Observer

Nostalgic Cinema: The African Queen (1951) (PG)

Nostalgic Cinema: The African Queen (1951)

Directed by John Huston

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Morley

Duration 115 mins.

After religious spinster's (Katharine Hepburn) missionary brother is killed in WWI Africa, dissolute steamer captain (Humphrey Bogart) offers her safe passage. She's not satisfied so she persuades him to destroy a German gunboat. The two spend most of their time fighting with each other rather than the Germans. Time alone on the river leads to love.

Dementia Friendly Cinemas have proven to be very therapeutic for people with memory problems and their families. Besides engaging the brain and stimulating emotions, being part of an audience enjoying a film helps people with dementia and their carers to feel less isolated and also challenges the stigma associated with the condition.

All Nostalgic Cinema performances have subtitles to assist full enjoyment of the film by any members of the audience who are hard of hearing.

Whilst promoted as a dementia friendly screening, we hope anyone who loves the old films will come along for an afternoon of fond memories.

Stuart Cameron, BBC and ITV Broadcaster The show is a celebration of the unprecedented rise to fame of two boys from Queens, New York, who went on to become the most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s, selling 38 million albums in the US alone, and receiving 10 Grammy Awards. Fritillaries

Fritillaries

Fritillaries

Running time: 1 Hour 10 minutes

Fritillaries is the original project of contemporary folk songwriter Hannah Pawson, a Bristol-based musician using guitar, banjo and harmonium. Taking her name from the Snake’s Head Fritillary, a flower of rebirth and hope, Hannah weaves worlds into her songs.

Whilst Hannah has been honing her songwriting and live performances since 2017, the arrival of her 2022 debut album resulted in her gaining much well earned attention and acclaim. Having performed as a duo for many years, Hannah’s future focus is as a solo artist. Her newer music - soon to be released - explores her relationship to grief, uncertainty and dealing with chronic illness. Living, loving and songwriting can all feel like gardening; bringing something beautiful into the world from the depths of the earth and through complicated root systems.

Fritillaries’ debut album was nominated for FATEA’s debut album of the year for 2022, was Folk Radio UK’s featured album of the month in August 2022, and received reviews from RNR magazine, Folk Radio UK, Folking and Americana UK among other publications. Her music has been featured on BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio 2, BBC Bristol, BBC Wales and BBC Devon.

Fritillaries have toured extensively in the UK in the last 5 years, headlining notable grassroots venues around the UK, such as Kitchen Garden Cafe (Birmingham), Green Note (London), Cafe #9 (Sheffield), Bristol Folk House, as well as performing at plenty of festivals, (Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, Bristol Folk Festival, Gate to Southwell, Hyde Park Folk Festival) and occasionally doing some international touring.

Where is Mrs Christie?

Where is Mrs Christie?

‘Where Is Mrs Christie?’ starring Liz Grand

Running time: 95 minutes - including an interval

Agatha Christie was one of the greatest thriller writers of all time and certainly the most prolific. In 1926, she was at the centre of a mystery as perplexing as any of her fiction, a series of events which sparked one of the biggest and most extensive police hunts in history.

Her crashed car was discovered in Surrey and the famous author was missing, presumed dead by many, for eleven days. However, she was eventually found at a luxury hotel in Harrogate. She claimed then, and for the rest of the life, that she was suffering from amnesia and remembered nothing. Neither the press nor the police believed her.

Actor Liz Grand presents her one-woman show ‘Where Is Mrs Christie?’ Did she suffer from amnesia? Was it a publicity stunt? Or was there a darker secret involved?  In true thriller style, all will be revealed.

“Liz Grand's performance in the title role is compelling. So persuasive is she that we the audience become co-conspirators. Her Mrs. Christie is irresistibly engaging, vulnerable, confiding and ultimately indomitable in her strength of spirit. It is a master-class in nuanced delivery and dramatic timing, deliberately tantalising, directed unfussily and designed for spot-on period fidelity.” Ian Barge The Stage ****

“It was a pleasure for us and the audience reaction was excellent. With comments like, "great", "marvellous", "so engaging" and “she (Liz Grand) had us totally enthralled from beginning to end” Thanks again. It was an absolute pleasure” Julian Morgan, Tiverton Community Arts
