Dementia Friendly Cinemas have proven to be very therapeutic for people with memory problems and their families. Besides engaging the brain and stimulating emotions, being part of an audience enjoying a film helps people with dementia and their carers to feel less isolated and also challenges the stigma associated with the condition.

All Nostalgic Cinema performances have subtitles to assist full enjoyment of the film by any members of the audience who are hard of hearing.

Whilst promoted as a dementia friendly screening, we hope anyone who loves the old films will come along for an afternoon of fond memories.

Tickets £5 - includes hot drink, biscuits and chat after the screening.

Ticket price includes £1 admin fee

The Metropolitan Opera: Grounded (12A)

The Metropolitan Opera: Grounded

The Met: Live in HD 2024-25 Season

Jeanine Tesori / Libretto by George Brant

Grounded (Met Premiere)

Tony Award–winning composer Jeanine Tesori’s powerful new opera Grounded premieres at the Metropolitan Opera, wrestling with often-overlooked issues created by 21st-century warmaking: the ethical conflicts created by the use of modern military technology and the psychological and emotional toll supposedly safe remote technology takes on our servicepeople. Canadian mezzo soprano Emily D’Angelo stars as the hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. American tenor Ben Bliss costars as the Wyoming rancher Eric in a production by Michael Mayer that brings this story to life in a high-tech staging which presents a variety of perspectives on the action. Met Music Director Yannick Ne´ zet-Se´ guin takes the podium to conduct Tesori’s kaleidoscopic opera.

Budapest Cafe Orchestra

Budapest Cafe Orchestra

Budapest Cafe Orchestra

Christian Garrick & the Budapest Café Orchestra are:

CHRISTIAN GARRICK – violin, darbuka

EDDIE HESSION – accordion

KELLY CANTLON – double bass

ADRIAN ZOLOTUHIN – guitar, saz, balalaika, domra

In 2009 Christian Garrick established the refreshingly unconventional and snappily attired Budapest Café Orchestra.  The intention to present a broad range of music from all over the world in the most entertaining and fun way.  One of BCO's prime directives is to take the music seriously but not so much themselves.  Part of the secret formula of the BCO's show presentation is performing all the music from memory and, combined their trademark wit and charm, audiences leave tingling with warmth and delight.

BCO are one of the very busiest acoustic groups for me today playing an average of 60 to 70 shows per annum.  Since their inception they have recorded one album every year and in January 2023 made their 14th Pavane (& the whole shebang-bang).  BCO are frequent guests to BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and on Martin’s Handley’s weekend Breakfast programmes.

Each member of the orchestra is a freelance musician in their own right.  Both Eddie and Adrian teach prolifically for budding school-age musicians. Christian is a professor of jazz violin at Guildhall School of Music, Royal Academy of Music, and Royal College of Music in London.

Adrian is curator and director of the Imperial Balalaika Orchestra of Overton (IBOO) who sometimes appear with BCO at special gala concerts.  Both Eddie and Christian are busy session recording the sessions and have each played on a multitude of movies.  Eddie even had an on-screen role in the Nick Cage film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin!

From a musical family with jazz and classical learnings Christian Garrick is musical director of BCO and his influences run far and wide.  He first discovered Hungarian and Romanian folk and gypsy music listening to Sandor Lakatos and Taraf du Haidouks.  Christian’s arrangements for BCO of Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Greig - the so called ‘squeezebox concertos’ - are rooted in BCO folklore.  His arrangements of traditional Gaelic tunes on the album The Gaelic Chronicles was met with critical acclaim with the likes of Cerys Matthews and Mark Radcliffe both championing the disc on their respective radio shows.  Christian is influenced by a range of fiddlers from Grappelli to Stuff Smith to Indian virtuosos L Shankar and L Subramaniam.  Nigel Kennedy, a sometimes collaborator with Christian on stage, described him as “one of my favourite violinists”.  Christian’s own unique hybrid playing style, sheer emotional passion and extraordinary improvisational abilities thrills audiences everywhere.

Soul Traders

Soul Traders

SOUL TRADERS

Please note that the seating plan that is shown is not how the room will be laid out on the night, and is just for ticketing purposes. Tables and chairs will be around the outside of the room.

The Soul Traders story was begun by Den Hegarty in 1999 when he put a band together specifically to play at the grand opening of his local village hall.

Twenty-five years and many reincarnations later the twelve-piece band continues to work and thrive under the mentoring and leadership of Den Hegarty.

Celebrating upbeat Soul and Funk classics from the sixties and seventies, the band’s close four-part harmonies, fearless brass and ruthless back line make for a dance night to challenge your very best boots.

The thing that binds the Soul Traders together is our mutual love of music. We have a very diverse repertoire, showcasing the breadth of diversity within our ranks. At the core of our catalogue, some of the finest northern soul there is to be had (as hinted at in the name). Thrown in alongside, a touch of funk and just a tad of good ol' fashioned bebop, blues and rock 'n' roll.

You can expect a mixture of superbly executed piano riffs, a heaped helping of pumping bass licks, ear tinglingly grooving percussion, some smooth strumming of the ol' six string and some of the finest trumpet blowing and driving saxophones there is to be had. Weave into this supreme musical mix a cornucopia of the most supremely talented singers there is to be seen for miles around, tying a grand virtuosic bow around the package that is The Soul Traders.

200 years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh works, the National Gallery, London is hosting the UK’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. Van Gogh is not only one of the most beloved artists of all time, but perhaps the most misunderstood. This film is a chance to re-examine and better understand this iconic artist. Focusing on his unique creative process, Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers explores the artist’s years in the south of France, where he revolutionised his style. Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art, turning the world around him into vibrant, idealised spaces and symbolic characters. Poets and lovers filled his imagination; everything he did in the south of France served this new obsession. In part, this is what caused his notorious breakdown, but it didn’t hold back his creativity as he created masterpiece after masterpiece. Explore one of art history's most pivotal periods in this once-in-a-century show

Christine Collister

Christine Collister

CHRISTINE COLLISTER

"..boundary breaking is routine for Collister and makes her one of the finest grown-up vocalists on the planet" Q

Touring for the first time in four years, Christine will be performing songs from the "Children of the Sea" project along with a selection of old favourites.

2024: Christine's career now spans an incredible 40 years.  Over that bridge of time she has released 24 albums, a DVD celebrating 20 years in the business and an acclaimed single with the BBC: the theme tune for "The Life and Loves of a She-Devil" in 1987.

Throughout, she has mesmerized and astounded with her unique blend of soul, blues, pop, jazz, country and folk, and today she remains as powerful, subtle, effortless and relevant as ever.

Collister grew up on the Isle of Man, and her professional recording career began after she moved to the UK in the mid 1980's, when she came to national attention singing the theme for the BBC Television series The Life and Loves Of A She Devil. A period of great critical and commercial success when working with Clive Gregson was followed by a fruitful and enduring association with Richard Thompson.

Christine is a magical live performer, with her gravity defying voice, assured and impressive live performances and great personal charm has become a familiar and popular name on the live scene including major international festivals from Glastonbury to Cambridge, Winnipeg to Port Fairey.

"a voice personally delivered by God." The Times

"Christine Collister has a killer voice. As full as Dusty Springfield or as blue as Alison Moyet" Froots

To be released in 2024 - Children Of The Sea is a very special project of 9 original songs inspired by Manx Folklore and a magical sense of place. Part funded by the Isle Of Man Arts Council, Culture Vannin and Fledgling Records, The CD is accompanied by a beautiful book complete with lyrics, inspirations and stories with original illustrations by Manx artists. It promises to be Collister's finest release and marks a turning point in her authentic artistic expression.

Christine has always enjoyed the collaborative process and has been an integral part of many and varied musical projects over the years. Her most recent collaboration with brilliant Australian guitarist Michael Fix has been a successful and delightful surprise for them both.  They released their second CD North&South in October of 2019 with a sell out tour of the UK followed by an equally successful tour of the Australian Festival scene in 2020.

"Christine Collister's singing was powerful and emotional, shifting effortlessly from soft and angelic to knock you out Janice Joplin style. Michael Fix's guitar was equally superb. He provided tasteful support in the most charming way and would then explode into amazing virtuoso runs across the finger board, all impeccably tasteful and clean."

Troubadour (Woy Woy NSW) concert review, Michael Fine

Christine's natural warmth and intimate connection with audiences coupled with her stunning voice, make her concerts delightfully memorable events.

One of the world's finest.. Q

Christine also toured and recorded with the female super group Daphne's

Flight. In 2017, 21 years after their first collaboration, they released a highly

acclaimed second album: "Knows Time, Knows Change" on Fledgling Records.
