“Music of intelligently crafted
brilliance” 5***** Songlines Magazine
“Some of the most beautiful music the genre has to offer” 5***** Maverick Magazine
Peter Knight’s Gigspanner Trio
New Album Preview Tour
"There’s
something of the proverbial elder statesman about Peter Knight, in terms of his
place in music, which cannot be overstated. It’s not just in the quality of his
playing...there’s a focus on the sheer inventiveness of Peter’s playing, in the
adventurous arrangements he shares with his collaborators, and in his musical
leadership”
Northern
Sky Magazine
Since his
inaugural performance with the fledgling Steeleye Span in 1970, Peter Knight has
been a mainstay of the British folk scene.
Never one to
rest on his laurels, Peter has carved a reputation as a relentlessly questing
musician “as mercurial as quicksilver”, and it is never quite so
apparent as in his work with the various Gigspanner line-ups.
The Gigspanner
Trio is the beating heart from which all other lineups have evolved, and the
one most loved by many for the intimacy and joy manifest in their virtuosic
performances. Audiences revel in the opportunity to witness ‘up close and
personal’ the almost telepathic communication that exists between Peter,
guitarist Roger Flack and hand percussionist, Sacha Trochet.
This
concert is an extra special one as the Trio will be showcasing selected pieces
from their long waited new album.
Described by Folk Radio UK as one of the “most
quietly brilliant sets of musicians in the folk world and beyond”, they
take self-penned material along with music rooted in the British Isles and
beyond, and with the flick of a bow, a finely chosen chord or slip of a beat,
produce richly atmospheric arrangements “with notes seemingly plucked
from the stars and rhythms from the equator” (Spiral Earth).

It’s a staggering 25 years since St Agnes Fountain first launched their unique brand of festive music into the world. Originally comprising David Hughes (guitar, vocals), Chris Leslie (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, flutes, vocals), Chris While (guitar, percussion, vocals) and Julie Matthews (keyboards, guitar, bouzouki, vocals), the band quickly carved out a sound all of their own.
Blending original Christmas songs with traditional carols, delivered in their unmistakable style, St Agnes Fountain have become an essential part of the festive season for thousands of people. So much so, they inspired the much-loved phrase: “Christmas starts with St Agnes Fountain.”
As one devoted concert-goer wrote in 2025:
“I would not mind if I missed the Christmas dinner, the pudding and mince pies, the presents and the drinks. But I would be devastated if I missed St Agnes Fountain at Christmas!”
Following David Hughes ’retirement due to ill health in 2020, and his sad passing in 2023, Chris While, Julie Matthews and Chris Leslie continued as a trio. Since then, they have released two studio albums and one live album, adding further depth to an already formidable catalogue of festive recordings.
December 2026 will see St Agnes Fountain tour their Silver Jubilee Show — a celebration of a quarter-century of music-making and festive celebrations. The show will draw from their extensive back catalogue of songs and tunes, poems and stories, as they once again raise the stained-glass arches and drape the fairy lights.
If you like Christmas, you’ll love St Agnes Fountain.
